Words are a lot like seeds. It takes care for them to take root and grow to their potential. Rita loves to garden words and make them clear, concise, and easy to read.

Years of teaching and an M.A. (Educational Studies) have given Rita Vanden Heuvel a skill set and insights about learning styles, early literacy, and assessment that she uses to develop materials that meet the developmental needs of learners. Rita works as a structural and stylistic (developmental) editor for Canadian educational publishers, and specializes in language arts, math, and science (mainly life sciences). She also writes and manages editorial projects and is often inspired by the synergy of writers and editors working together to produce materials that meet the needs of learners today.

In her earlier life, Rita worked in the trenches in community development for projects ranging from Big Sisters to health care education in Ethiopia, where she planted many seeds. She has been a rural organization specialist, college teacher, and Montessori teacher and school director.

Away from her laptop, Rita is outdoors. An enthusiastic gardener, she is an aspiring Miss Rumphius and spreads seeds wherever she goes. She also loves to camp, hike, paddle, ski, cycle, and practise sun salutations overlooking the lake she lives on.
